About this guide.
Teachers want to use ChatGPT.
As of September 2023, 1 in 3 teachers in England say they use generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, “to help with school work”.
There is limited hands-on, teacher-validated guidance available for new users on how to get the best out of ChatGPT in the classroom.
We believe generative AI tools show great promise in supporting teachers & tutors to prepare & deliver lessons, both by reducing preparation time & increasing lesson quality.
We have chosen to focus on ChatGPT. It is free-to-access, has significant capabilities and already widely in use.
This guide aims to support teachers who are new to ChatGPT to get the best out of it for lesson preparation & delivery.
We know it makes a difference
The impact of using ChatGPT, supported by this guide, has been robustly tested by the National Foundation for Education Research in a study commissioned by the Education Endowment Foundation.
The trial included 260 teachers in 68 secondary schools across England and found that teachers cut their lesson and resource planning time by over 30 percent. The analysis indicated no noticeable difference in quality between those who used ChatGPT and those who did not.
The research can be found here.
Built with teachers, for teachers.
Over the first half of the Autumn Term of 2023, we worked closely with AI experts & over 40 teachers & tutors across England to develop & test ChatGPT use cases that would be most additive to their existing lesson preparation & delivery.
This guide highlights the key areas where teachers & tutors found ChatGPT most helpful - saving time & providing high-quality resources:
Finding activity ideas in seconds
Getting ready-made practice questions
Adapting the materials to work for your group
Crafting model answers and building mock exam questions
Getting effective explanations and creating step-by-step examples
Testing student understanding and avoiding misconceptions
We also recommend setting up Custom Instructions to get more tailored responses.
